The dream of building a tower on the UF campus began in 1953 when alumni sought funds to construct a monument in memory of students killed in World Wars I and II. The tower also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the University of Florida in 1853. Construction of the 157-foot-tall Century Tower was completed in 1956. In 1979, a cast-bell carillon was added to the tower's bell chamber, one of only four carillons in Florida and the eighth largest in North America. The carillon tolls each quarter hour of the day and is played on special occasions.
