The university trusts students to manage their own affairs, including decisions and responsibilities about academic, financial, and personal issues. In addition, at the University of Florida (and all other universities), the privacy of a student's academic record is protected by the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known as the Buckley Amendment. All student data maintained by the university is part of the educational record, including but not limited to all biographical, application and grading data. Other than public information classified as "directory information," there is to be no release of the educational record to any party without the express written consent of the student. With the lives and well-being of more than 50,000 students at stake, we take the responsibility of campus safety very seriously. The UF Police Department is a state and nationally accredited law enforcement agency with 90 officers who provide 24-hour daily patrol and protection of campus. UFPD is the second largest accredited university police department in the United States. The university has developed extensive response plans to many different types of safety concerns and has a successful collaboration with law enforcement agencies throughout the state, Alachua County, and the city of Gainesville. Our safety communication plan combines mass simultaneous e-mail notification, UF home page postings, text-messaging and media alerts to disseminate emergency information quickly and comprehensively.
