Credit by Examination and Dual Enrollment Course Credit

Credit by Examination

There are several credit-by-examination programs that earn credit toward a UF degree. The following guidelines apply:

  • A maximum of 30 semester hours may be granted by combining AICE, AP, IB and CLEP credit.
  • Students beginning in the fall or spring term must have taken the exams (AICE, AP, IB, CLEP) and have their scores reported to the university before enrolling or, at the latest, before the end of the first term of enrollment at UF.
  • Students who begin in the summer must have taken the exam(s) and had the scores reported before the end of their first fall term.

If you submit appropriate scores, UF will grant credit and post the course equivalencies to your UF transcript. Equivalent courses earned by examination generally fulfill the same requirements that the UF course fulfills.

Credit will be awarded only once for the same subject, whether the credit is earned by examination, dual enrollment, transfer credit or UF course credit. UF course credit takes precedence over all other forms of credit. Credit awarded for dual enrollment or transfer courses takes precedence over credit by examination. If duplicate credit exists among AICE, AP, IB or CLEP, the exam yielding the most credit will be awarded.

Community College Coursework Accepted for UF Credit

In general, students may transfer up to 60 credit hours from community colleges as part of the hours needed for their UF degrees, regardless when these hours are earned, but subject to university and college degree requirements. It is the prerogative of the student’s college to determine how transfer credit satisfies the specific degree’s course requirements.

High school students with community college coursework can also receive UF credit, where appropriate, regardless if that coursework also satisfied high school graduation requirements. Equivalent courses generally fulfill the same requirements (e.g. General Education) that the UF course fulfills. However, whether a course fulfills the UF Writing and Math Requirement is determined by specific criteria, not course number equivalency.
Complete dual enrollment and transfer credit policy.

Freshman applicants with community college credits: Any student who has earned 12 or more semester hours of college credit following graduation from high school is considered a transfer applicant and cannot apply to UF as a freshman.

Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE)

Students completing AICE examinations should submit official scores to UF as evidence of completion of a college-level course taken in high school. Students' scores will be evaluated; if the scores meet minimum requirements, the student will receive credit for UF course equivalencies that will appear on the student's UF transcript.
